Your First Week:
Day 1: You will spend your first day with a member of the Human Resources team. They will assist you with filling out all new hire paperwork like insurance enrollment and income tax forms. You will have your picture taken and be given a photo ID as well as an access card. You will be set up in the time clock system. New jail officers will be taken to the Prince George Commonwealth’s Attorney to be sworn in.
Days 2 – 5 (2 – 3 for civilians): You will go through new employee orientation. Various topics are introduced, such as:
- Introduction to Corrections
- Universal Health Precautions
- Cultural Diversity
- Interpersonal Communications
- Mental Health Issues and Suicide Prevention
- Prison Rape Elimination Act and Sexual Misconduct
- Employee Rules of Conduct
- Personnel policies
- Logs and Reports
- Use of Force
- Inmate Conduct and Discipline
- Inmate Rights and Grievances
- Overview of Basic Jailor Academy
Uniformed staff will be issued uniforms and gear. You will be taken to see various departments and meet some other staff. You will meet the Superintendent as well. Lastly, you will given your post assignment and told when and where to report after orientation to begin your on-the-job training.
